Summary

On September 28, 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia created a 15-foot tsunami, killing more than 2,000 people and displacing more than 130,000 from their homes. After having provided emergency relief in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, this fund is now supporting long-term recovery assistance to survivors. All donations to this fund will exclusively support disaster relief and recovery efforts in Indonesia.

Challenge

The powerful earthquake and devastating tsunami struck the coast of Indonesia, causing widespread damage to communities throughout the region. Several of SARF’s local nonprofit partners are responding to survivors’ immediate and long-term needs and have asked us to help fund their relief and recovery efforts.

Solution

All donations to this fund will support recovery and relief efforts for areas in Indonesia affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Initially, the fund helped first responders meet immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Now that the initial relief work is complete, this fund has transitioned to support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations responding to this disaster.

Long-Term Impact

We believe that organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support for survivors of natural disasters like this eruption. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges. SARF will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors.
